"In the fall of 1981 I moved to Dayton, Ohio to become a ninja..." And so opens the prologue to an exciting new book by former Black Belt magazine columnist Darryl Caldwell. This book tells the story of the origin of real ninja training in the West. The story uncovers:
- what separates a ninja from an assassin - how to become a ninja black belt - who was the shogun's ninja in real life, a namesake later used by director Quentin Taurantino - how the ninja's unarmed combat distinguishes itself from other systems - how a fighting staff becomes a living thing - the story of James Bond and the ninja - how a group of kids learned first-hand how to make a proper ninja suit - what a private detective learns when he gets hired to spy on a ninja school - how to train on your own without a teacher - what happened on the ninja grandmaster's first trip to the United States - and a whole lot more... |

Since 1994, Paul Masse, a native of Miami Florida, has been living in Japan and training consistently two to three times a week directly with Grand Master Masaaki Hatsumi Sensei of the Bujinkan Martial Arts. No other foreigner has trained this long and consistently with Grand Master Hatsumi Sensei. Although Paul has trained at the feet of the Grand Master for the last fifteen years; he remains curiously unknown; perhaps taking to heart the ninja concept of “Sugata wo Kesu” or “vanishing, disappearing, or erasing your form”.

After starting training in 1986, Tim Bathurst made his first trip to Japan in 1990 at the age of 21. On personal invitation by the Grandmaster himself, Tim moved to Japan in 1997 where he lived and studied under the Masters for 8 years. He one of the few people to have received his Master (Shihan) licence while living in Japan. If you’ve visited Japan in the last few years, you would have seen Tim translating in the dojo for the Masters.
